Transition Workshops

INCLUDEnyc’s expert staff conducts free workshops at schools and community organizations citywide. Our transition workshops cover a range of topics and are designed to meet the most pressing needs of families of young people with disabilities who are preparing to leave high school and begin life as an adult.

Introduction to Transition Planning: Learn the basics of planning for life after high school for students with disabilities. We will discuss transition skills, how to document transition planning on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), adult and employment supports and service agencies, disability law, informational resources, and next steps to consider in your planning process. 

Understanding Diploma Options and Pathways: Gain an understanding of the requirements for obtaining a local, Regents, or advanced Regents diploma and alternate pathways to graduation, such as a high school equivalency degree (HSE) and the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential. 

College Access for Students with Disabilities: Learn about the change in the rights of people with disabilities from high school to college, how to apply for college accommodations, and the basics of financial aid and college planning. Come to this workshop knowing what type of diploma your child is working towards! For parents of students who will take or have taken standard Regents exams.

Turning 18: Rights, Benefits, & Planning: Get an overview of public benefits, eligibility process, and levels of guardianship available for young people with disabilities when they turn 18. For parents of students with disabilities.

Navigating OPWDD through Transition: Get an overview of OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities), including community supports and services available to people with disabilities once they leave high school, eligibility, process and appeals. For parents of students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

Working While Receiving SSI: Get to know Supplemental Security Income (SSI) work incentives and how to use them to maximize monthly payments. For people with disabilities who receive SSI and are already working or who are interested in working while receiving SSI, and their parents.
