New York, NY, December 1, 2022 – Cheryelle Cruickshank, Executive Director of INCLUDEnyc, issued the following statement in response to Chancellor Banks’ announcement concerning the future of special education in NYC public schools:

INCLUDEnyc commends the Chancellor’s announcement today on the City reimagining special education. For nearly four decades, INCLUDEnyc has helped families of students with disabilities advocate for educational and social equity. We are pleased that the Mayor and Chancellor are prioritizing the needs of 300,000+ students with disabilities ages 3-21, and this administration’s willingness to address longtime systemic policy and cultural barriers to students appropriately accessing special education services, support, and programs. We look forward to supporting and partnering with the Department of Education on addressing the educational and social inequities between non-disabled students and students with disabilities.
